Hu Shulan was voted as a 2014 National Model Philanthropic Figure for her decade-long donations to the Water Cellars for Mothers project at CCTV Charity Night For A Better China held in Beijing on December 5, 2014.

Co-sponsored by China Women’s Development Foundation (CWDF) and China’s Central Television (CCTV), the annual charity event aims to recognize charity-minded organizations and individuals for their remarkable contributions to the growth of Chinese public welfare.
Since 2006, Hu and her husband, two retirees from Beijing, has continually donated an amount of money out of their pension to the Water Cellars for Mothers project. Hu continued her annual donation to the charity program, event after her husband died earlier that year. Their annual donation was capable of building one water cellar.

The TV gala also highlighted CWDF’s efforts to implement Water Cellars for Mothers and School Safe Drinking Water projects in economically underdeveloped regions across western China.

“The Water Cellars for Mothers project has greatly enlarged access to water resources, raised the social status of target women in both their families and local society, and made a remarkable improvement to the local environment,” said Secretary-General of the CWDF Qin Guoying at the event.
A total of 233 million yuan (U.S.$ 35.42 million) was raised by organizers at the event. About 30 million yuan (U.S.$ 4.56 million) came from China Everbright Bank and Mary Kay (China) Cosmetics. The latest fund would be able to help more underprivileged women and children access safe drinking water on a daily basis.
Those present at the TV gala were Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC) and president of All-China Women's Federation (ACWF); Wang Qinmin, president of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC) and vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC); Hu Zhanfan, president of the CCTV; and other officials from sponsoring organizations.
