An auction event to raise funds for impoverished children with cleft lips and palates was jointly organized by China Women’s Development Foundation (CWDF) and the organizing committee of Smile Movement Project at a hotel in Hangzhou, capital of southeast China’s Zhejiang Province, on December 5, 2014.
Relevant statistics showed that there were a total 748,600 children with cleft lips and palates in China in 2014 and that one out 600 newborns had the problem. The number was said to rise by more 30,000 each year.
“Smiling is a natural privilege for human beings, but children with cleft lips and palates are deprived the right to smile, eat their meals, and interact with others. If a teenage patient comes from an impoverished family, then his or her life is probably subject to inferiority and limitless pain,” said Deputy Secretary-General of the CWDF Zhang Jianmin.
Xie Hongbin, a surgical expert from Third Hospital in Peking University, and Sa Nati, a former patient with a cleft lip and palate from northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, were invited to share their stories, helping the audience learn more about the disease.
Besides, organizers auctioned 10 artistic items, which raised a fund of over three million yuan (U.S.$ 456,000) in total. This would provide financial assistance to more than 600 teenage beneficiaries.Smile Movement Project has dedicated itself to providing free medical treatment to impoverished children with cleft lips and palates across the entire nation, since it was launched under the call of Han Kai, a surgical professional for children from Hangzhou-based Operation Smile Charity Hospital, in 1991. By the end of 2014, it had assisted over 100 teams of medical volunteers to offer free cleft palate surgeries in impoverished regions across the country, and provided 28,768 children with operations to help them bring a warm smile back to their homes. The auction event drew the attendance of nearly 400 representatives from domestic entrepreneurial and media circles.
