The China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF) officially honored Indra K. Nooyi, CEO of PepsiC0, as International Goodwill Ambassador of the Water Cellar for Mothers project at a ceremony held in Beijing on October 22, 2014.

At the event, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) Meng Xiaosi presented a certificate to Nooyi as the first International Goodwill Ambassador in the project's history.

Under the leadership of Nooyi, PepsiC0 has made great contributions to the Water Cellar for Mothers project over the past decade. Its support began in 2001, making the company become one of the first Fortune 500 group in China to have helped fund the project since it was launched in 2000. By the end of 2013, PepsiCo Foundation, PepsiCo, and PepsiCo staff had altogether donated 53 million yuan (U.S.$ 8,675,440), with more than 1,500 water cellars built, over 170 small-scale safe-water projects newly built or upgraded, more than 90 campus safe-water projects established, and 170,000 rural residents provided with safe-water training.

All these projects have benefited more than 717,000 people across 10 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, including Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hebei, Qinghai, Shanxi provinces; Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region; and Chongqing Municipality.

When receiving the certificate, Nooyi said she would like to thank the CWDF for giving her such an honor.

"PepsiCo will continue to provide assistance to people who need our help. I am glad to see that over the past three years, the company has worked with CWDF to implement the Water Cellar for Mothers project in China. I know that our work will continue and Pepsi will remain committed to helping more people gain access to safe drinking water," she said.

“PepsiCo has set up a good example for other enterprises in the cooperation with government departments and charity organizations to assist more impoverished Chinese in having access to safe drinking water for years,” said Deputy Director of the Subcommittee of Social and Legal Affairs under the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Vice-President of CWDF Zhen Yan, adding that the project has greatly accelerated the process of bringing safe drinking water to rural China.

Vice-President and Secretary-General of the CWDF Qin Guoying said that with the help of PepsiCo, the charity initiative had been implemented in 30 counties of 8 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, and helped about 650,000 people obtain access to safe drinking water by the end of 2013.

The project team has achieved its target ahead of its agenda, which specifies that the project will provide safe drinking water to 500,000 people in west China by the end of 2015.

At the ceremony, PepsiCo pledged 1.3 million yuan (U.S.$ 212,400) to quake-hit Ludian County in southwest China’s Yunnan Province to construct drinking water supply facilities for locals.

Those in attendance included President of the CWDF Huang Qinyi who was also former vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the ACWF; officials from the Asia Foundation and Chinese Center For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC); as well as several senior managers from PepsiCo.
